Introduction: Mental & Emotional Skills

Lesson Summary: Mental & Emotional Skills

Welcome to Mental 5. In this lesson, you’ll be introduced to the five mental skills that help high performers navigate pressure and perform at their best. You’ll also explore the relationship between mental skills and emotional intelligence, learning how these two skill sets work together to support performance.

A key concept in this course is“chatter”, the words and mental pictures that constantly run through your mind. You’ll learn why identifying and regulating your chatter is essential for building self-awareness, self-regulation, and creating the right mindset for any task.

By the end of this lesson, you’ll understand the course objectives, the role of emotional intelligence in performance, and why managing your chatter is the foundation of the Mental 5 framework.

Hi, my name is Parrish. I am your coach. I am the designer and the instructor of the Mental 5 course. Okay, let’s look at the learning objectives today.

No. #1 – Identify five critical thinking skills for navigating pressure.

No. #2 – Identify 25 emotional intelligence skills for navigating pressure.

No. #3 – Introduce chatter or thoughts, aka random words and mental pictures.

That’s how the brain works. Now, what’s important to understand is that mental five develops your emotional intelligence skills. See, we’ve got two things in play here, right? Mental skills and emotional intelligence skills. It’s important you understand that these two are separate, but they work in harmony together for top athletes.

Now, at a glance, we can look at the two skill sets and we can see the difference right out of the gate. Mental five. Five mental skills is the framework. When we look at the emotional intelligence skills, the framework consists of 25 different skills. Now, when we really drill into the 25 emotional intelligence skills, there are 10 that we see high performers, top performers are doing. It all has to do with self regulation, self awareness, all of what’s going on on the inside. This course, mental. 5, will focus strictly on the five mental skills or five things we understand high performing athletes are doing with their thoughts, what we call chatter.

You don’t need to embrace chatter, chatter is a keystone habit in the Mental 5 course. Your success in this course will be based on your self discipline and your ability to identify your chatter and, more importantly, regulate your chatter for your specific task in the moment. As we learn to recognize our chatter in the moment, we are also developing our emotional intelligence skills, specifically two competencies the self awareness competency, which has a set of skills, and then also the self regulation competency, which also has a set of skills. For now, let’s focus on the five things high performers do with their thoughts. The five things high performers do with their chatter. So, from this point forward within this program, we don’t use the word thoughts. We will now refer to everything that’s going on inside of your head as chatter and self talk or self check or peer check. This program is all about you understanding how important it is to have the right chatter, to have the right words and mental pictures for the task, regardless of your sport, whether it’s a big ball, a little ball, a big stick, a little stick, a big hole, or a little hole.

It’s all about task. And you creating the right brain body sync. And it all starts with chatter. Okay, let’s look at the learning objectives today. Number one, identify five critical thinking skills for navigating pressure. Number two, identify 25 emotional intelligence skills for navigating pressure. And number three, introduce chatter or thoughts, aka random words and mental pictures. That’s how the brain works.
